What follows is a list containing examples of everyday Americans doing exactly what the left decries as a fabrication of the mind — namely, using firearms to defend their own lives and the lives of others.
In January 2015, Politico magazine described the whole idea behind “defensive gun ownership” as a “tragic myth.” And in October 2015, The New York Times said the idea of average citizens drawing their guns to keep themselves safe is a “foolhardy notion.” More recently — on December 1, 2016 — the NYT suggested it is a “fantasy that citizens can stand up to gunmen by shooting it out.”
Do not tell that to the following 20 individuals who used guns defensively to defend their own lives and the lives of others during 2016:

It’s actually many more than 20 times, this is just 20 examples of something much more widespread. There have been several studies to determine the number of defensive guns uses in America annually. All have found number between 500,000 and three million times a year a bad guy is stopped by an armed citizen.* In the great majority of defensive gun uses no shots are fired. In those cases the bad guy simply breaks off the attack and runs away. In all of the 20 cases Breitbart has assembled the victim shot the assailant, so the list of 20 is a subset of total defensive gun uses.
*CDC Study: Use of Firearms for Sefl-Defense is “Important Crime Deterrent.” The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council released the results of their research through the CDC last month. Researchers compiled data from previous studies in order to guide future research on gun violence, noting that “almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.”
